Our Clients Love Our Natural Sugar Paste!

Nowadays, the words ‘natural’, ‘organic’, and ‘kind’ get thrown around like confetti when it comes to health and beauty products. Sometimes products are these things, and sometimes they’re not. But guess what? The sugar paste we make and use for hair removal is natural—so natural you can eat it!

Made from just three ingredients—water, lemon juice and sugar—this product is safe, effective, and naturally green. (Not in colour (silly), but in regard to the environment!)

While other body hair removal methods create a ton of waste that doesn’t compost easily (ahem—wax, wax strips, plastic applicators), sugar paste is genuinely kind and gentle to Mother Nature.

Here’s what our clients say about their experience with Sugar’d and our natural sugar paste:

“After years of waxing I decided to give sugaring a try, I figured it couldn’t be any worse and I have now been going to Sugar’d for close to 5 years. I love the results that I get from sugaring and it’s all natural. Also unlike wax it washes off with water so no scrubbing any little bits that have been left over. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and even though I am having my hair ripped out I usually am laughing and leave with a smile. Strange. I have referred many people now to Sugar’d and they too have only positive things to say.” –Deb Enns

“I have been getting Sugar’d by Tammy for several years now. She is amazing at what she does and makes you feel so comfortable. Every appointment is full of laughs and funny conversation and I feel like I’ve made an amazing, life-long friend! I also love how easy it is to be able to *text* to book an appointment. The results you get from sugaring are incredible. You notice a difference in the type of growth you get, just after a few appointments. Thank you, Tammy!” –Nia Cee

“I somewhat randomly ended up booking a Sugar’d appointment, and I won’t go anywhere else ever since! The staff are amazing, and they do such a fantastic job. They are busy, so book in advance, but well worth the wait. I can’t recommend it enough!” –Contessa Sookerukoff

“I have been coming here religiously for over two years and I am never disappointed. Katherine is fantastic! Quick, professional and great company. The studio is always immaculately cleaned, very bright, friendly and inviting whenever I come in! I HIGHLY recommend it here.” –Mercy McVety

Skincare Before and After Hair Removal

Hair care and skincare are both equally important, and when you’re consistently invested in aesthetic hair removal, the skin that holds those hair follicles needs a little love.

At Sugar’d, we offer advice on both pre-hair removal and post-hair removal:

Before Hair Removal

In the weeks leading up to your sugaring appointment, we recommend gently exfoliating the area daily, and applying moisturizer afterwards. This helps to prevent ingrown hairs and keeps the skin hydrated and supple.

However—do not do these things on the actual the day of your appointment. Exfoliation of the skin on the day of hair removal can be irritating to the skin after your appointment. If you go in with wide open pores, some redness and blotching may occur.

Also, we don’t recommend using moisturizer on the day of your appointment. Lotions and oils can cause the sugar product we use to not grip the hair tightly, which can result in multiple tries and a lot of tweezing.

Save yourself the hassle, and arrive at your sugaring appointment with un-exfoliated, un-moisturized skin.

After Hair Removal

After your appointment, you may want to apply a kind and unscented moisturizer to ease any redness or irritation that may occur. There’s no need for exfoliation yet; we recommend waiting 2-3 days after to begin the daily exfoliation routine that we mentioned above.

Also? Keeping your appointments regular (every 4-5 weeks) is important, because the hair will grow back more sparsely every month, resulting in less overall hair removal irritation.

To find out more about the process of sugaring, what it’s made with, and how the procedure works, visit our website. To book an appointment at a location near you, call the location of your choice (locations are listed on our website; we currently have them in Vancouver, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Mission, and Chilliwack).

Dare to be bare (while keeping up skincare!), and you’ll never go back!

The History of Cosmetic Hair Removal

Think the practice of body hair removal is new? Nope! The history of cosmetic hair removal is long and quite interesting. Here are some of the more poignant eras of note when it comes to removing body hair:

The Egyptians are known to have been on their beauty game first, but their focus was primarily cosmetic hair removal! The women of ancient Egypt removed all of their body hair (including the hair on their heads!) with tools such as primitive tweezers (made from shells), pumice stones (ouch!), beeswax and sugar-based pastes.

During the Roman Empire, those who lacked body hair were considered to be of higher class. Many men and women used similar tools to that of the Egyptians to remove body hair, including pubic hair, which is why many of the ancient Roman statues depict immaculately clean-shaven men.

Middle Ages

For such a dark and seemingly horrific period in history, the Middle Ages was the era of Queen Elizabeth II, who set the precedence for hair removal among women of the upper class. However, the focus of hair removal for women during this time was their faces, not their bodies.

Women removed their eyebrows and hair from their foreheads to make their foreheads appear larger, and they did so with walnut oil, bandages soaked in cat pee (yep), and vinegar.

The late 18th century brought with it a much more civilized approach to hair removal—with the invention of razors for men.

This time in our history brought about the development of the first women’s razor, which ultimately propelled women to begin shaving their underarms. (Probably helping them to avoid noticeable body odour for longer periods of time.)

During wartime, nylons became scare, which forced women to go bare-legged more often. This was made easier and more cosmetically appealing by the invention of the first electric razor.

Hair removal became more and more acceptable during the 50’s, prompting women to not only have their legs and underarms regularly, but also begin to tweeze and shape their eyebrows.

This decade was home to both wax kits and laser hair removal—although the latter quickly (and obviously temporarily) became abandoned due to it’s skin-damaging tendencies.

Electrolysis became safe and reliable during the 70’s, and the resurgence of removing hair around the bikini line was prompted—probably due to the swimsuit trend that had carried on from the decade earlier.

1980s – Present Day

Today, most women and men make use of some form of hair removal regularly. Whether it be shaving, waxing, sugaring, electrolysis, laser hair removal, threading, or simply tweezing, cosmetic hair removal is only becoming more and more acceptable and mainstream.

If you’ve never tried sugaring to remove your unwanted body hair, we suggest you book an appointment and try it—it was, after all, used all the way back to the ancient Egyptians for a reason.

Ladies and Gentlemen: Stop Shaving!

Stop shaving!

Although hair removal is usually thought of as something women engage in or practice, the fact is, most men choose to remove hair, too. Nowadays, most men and women in Canada and the United States can say they’ve tried some form of hair removal, whether it be shaving legs, waxing an upper lip or underarm, or sugaring their bikini line.

But what do we really think about hair removal?

Some women believe that hair removal is somewhat of a double standard (having to shave two full legs from 12 years on every couple of days is no light work), but most also will say that they find it necessary or enjoy the feeling of having smooth legs—especially in the summer.

And shaving every couple of days isn’t even necessary…you can employ hair removal methods that last much longer, like sugaring! If you hate shaving so frequently, try our method, and you won’t be sorry.

So what about men?

Many men love to remove hair on their arms (and underarms!), especially if they have tattoos they want to show off during the summer months. Sugaring is great for this, too—the process is fast and efficient and lasts for weeks, not days.

Men also use our services to remove hair on their back and neck—places that are difficult to shave or wax on one’s own. Again, the result is favourable because it lasts a long time in comparison to shaving.

Bottom line? Stop shaving! We know you all love smooth skin and remove at least a little bit of your unwanted body hair on a somewhat regular basis. If you’re doing it anyway, why not do it in an effective way that lasts way longer than 24-48 hours?!

To book a sugaring appointment, visit our website at sugard.ca, and choose the location you’d like to visit—there are six of them for your convenience.

Dare to be bare, friends! Stop shaving and start sugaring.

Hair Removal in Abbotsford

Summer is finally here, and that means it’s bathing suit season. Thinking about hair removal for your bikini line, underarms, legs, or anywhere else?

If you live in Abbotsford, you’re in luck: there are several hair removal providers who specialize in diverse types of hair removal. Here are a few different methods that are available to you:

A very popular hair removal method right now, sugaring is a clean and kind procedure that rids one of unwanted body hair in an eco-friendly way. The product itself is made from just three ingredients: water, lemon juice, and sugar.

Aside from environmentally responsible ingredients, there is also the added benefit of having no applicators or strips to worry about–this means minimal waste!

To prepare for sugaring, hair growth must be at least ¼ of an inch in length, and it’s recommended to repeat the process every 4-5 weeks. Cost is fairly low (typically $30 for bikini).

Want to learn more about sugaring? Click HERE.

Waxing is fairly similar to sugaring in terms of method, pain, and how long the procedure takes and lasts for, but that’s where the similarities end.

It produces way more waste and pulls the hair in the opposite direction of growth. It also must be heated, which can result in wax burns. Cost is low-mediocre (about $30-$40 for bikini).

If you currently get waxed, we totally recommend you try sugaring—you won’t regret it.

Threading is very quick and precise, which is fabulous for efficiency and accuracy. It’s highly recommended for hair removal of the brows and other types of facial hair, but not for bikini, legs, or back.

It’s also possible to simply walk into a threading bar instead of making an appointment (which you typically have to do for other types of hair removal), which suits some people better.

Cost is minimal (typically $6-$8 for brows).

Laser hair removal is a completely different ball game. While the other methods listed above offer only temporary solutions, laser hair removal will help you achieve more permanent results. In fact, if administered properly, it can result in an 80% reduction in hair growth.

But here’s the catch: the procedure involves attending several lengthy appointments over the course of a set time, and it’s not cheap. Cost is high (approximately $250-$650 for legs per session; there are typically several sessions required).

So dare to be bare this summer, and get that unwanted hair removed, stat! To book a sugaring appointment in Abbotsford, visit our website. To find out more about hair removal for men, read our blog post on the topic.

See you soon!

The Environmental Benefits of Sugaring vs. Waxing

Although waxing has been one of the most popular forms of hair removal in the last couple of decades, sugaring is now giving the procedure a run for its money. Why? Because there are so many environmental advantages to sugaring—waxing just doesn’t compare.

Here are two major eco-friendly benefits of sugaring vs. waxing:

Sugar Paste is 100% Natural

We know: we all see the word ‘natural’ thrown out everywhere to describe everything, right? But when it comes to sugaring, it’s true! Our sugar paste is 100% natural—that’s why we call it ‘eco-sweet body hair removal’!

The product itself is made using just three ingredients: sugar, water, and lemon juice. In fact, marketing our product as edible has been part of our recent campaign strategy to show our customers just how natural and kind our sugar paste really is—our product is so natural, you can eat it!

(Just ask our campaign baby…😉)

Waste is Minimal in Comparison to Waxing

Waxing is associated with a lot of unnecessary waste. Take a second to think about it: there are multiple cloth or paper strips, wooden applicators, and then the wax itself, which is environmentally harmful—this stuff doesn’t decompose easily, guys.

All of this adds up to a lot of waste every time someone is waxed!

But with sugar paste, you just use one ball of paste. That’s it! And because it’s a 100% natural, earth-friendly substance, it decomposes easily and efficiently. In fact, you can compost it—and that’s a massive environmental advantage.

No strips, no applicators, and just one small ball of sugar paste. That’s it.

Have we convinced you to trade waxing for sugaring? We hope so! Aside from a host of other reasons to make the switch, sugaring definitely scores more points for the environment than waxing does.

Keep your environmental footprint a little smaller, and book an appointment at the Sugar’d closest to you. Visit our website and check out our locations; we currently have six in BC, including Vancouver, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Mission, and Chilliwack.

Take your pick, contact the shop you wish to visit, and give sugaring a try. No one goes back to waxing, guys. No one. Sugaring vs. waxing? Not even a fair fight.

What You Should Know about Sugaring

If you’ve said goodbye to conventional body hair removal methods and are interested in alternative treatments that last longer and are more efficient, then you need to learn about a newer body hair removal method called sugaring.

Here’s what you need to know:

It’s Safe

What do we mean by ‘safe’? We mean room temperature. As opposed to waxing, sugar paste is not hot and is the same temperature as your skin. This results in zero burns or uncomfortable temperature situations, which can occur during waxing.

Also, sugar paste only adheres to hair and dead skin—this means no accidental tearing of the skin or other harmful side effects.

It Yields Impressive Results

By pulling hair in the same direction as the growth, the result is much cleaner and smoother than pulling it in the opposite direction—something that is done during waxing. The result is smooth skin that stays hair-free for up to two weeks, and then grows back thinner and more sparsely each time you receive another treatment.

It’s Easy

In fact, its so simple that we created kits so busy people like you can sugar yourself from home!

Also, sugaring only takes a few minutes—typically less time than it takes to get waxed. This is because instead of having to apply individual cloth strips to each portion being waxed, we use a ball of sugar paste that is reused throughout your entire treatment.

It’s Usually Less Painful Than Waxing

Again, this is due to the mild temperature and pulling against the grain of the hair. Most of our clients used to be waxed before they were introduced to sugaring, and 100% will tell you they’d never go back.

Sugaring is where it’s at!

It’s Green

Made of only sugar, water and lemon juice, sugar paste is 100% eco-friendly. In fact, it’s so natural, you can eat it! (And we’ve proven that time and time again. Trust us; it’s been the basis for several of our ad campaigns!)

For more information on sugaring or to book an appointment, please visit our website. We have 6 locations across the lower mainland, including Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Surrey, Langley, and Vancouver.

Give sugaring a try, and you’ll never want to use any other body hair removal method—it’s that kind and easy.

Summer Hair Removal for Men

Yes, men elect to remove their body hair, too. If you’re considering hair removal, don’t waste your time—try sugaring! Hair removal for men is exactly the same as hair removal for women. We don’t discriminate, and it’s way more common than you might think.

So what do men typically choose to get sugared? Here are some popular options we offer:

Male Brazilian

Yep—this one’s a popular choice of hair removal for men. Men like to be bare down there, too, and if you’re a guy who thinks that men don’t need to ‘manscape’, think again. Do you like it when your partner takes the time to clean her/himself up?

We thought so. Try a male brazilian!

*Note: only our Langley and Chilliwack locations offer male Brazilians, so if you’re into it, be sure to book your appointment at one of these salons.

This is another popular choice for men. Although sporting a hairy back and/or shoulders at the beach is totally cool, if it bothers you and you want that hair gone, sugaring is the best way to take care of it.

Sugaring lasts longer than most other hair removal methods, it’s typically less painful, and our sugar paste is room temperature—not hot. This bodes well for having hair removed where you can’t see it yourself.

Men who have a lot of leg hair often enjoy the feeling of having smooth legs. Not only can tons of hair make it difficult to apply sunscreen in the summertime, but ultra-hairy legs can also make you very warm in the sun!

If you’re a swimmer, you probably shave. Do yourself a favour, and get sugared, instead. It’s way less upkeep, and will save you loads of time.

Arms are a big one for guys who want to show off their tattoos—if you have an amazing piece you want to make visible, let us help you make that happen! Our sugar paste creates a smooth, clean result that optimizes the appearance of that art on your arms.

Again, a smooth chest is becoming more and more desirable during the summer months, due to the reasons we mentioned above. (Sunscreen plus hot temperatures equals messy and uncomfortable.)

The most important thing is to be comfortable in your own body. If you have no interest in hair removal, then that’s totally fine! But hair removal for men is becoming more and more popular, because the stigma has been lifted, and more men are talking about the results (which they love).

Contact us today to book your first appointment and give sugaring a try. Remember to call the location closest to you, and book with that particular salon.

Enjoy the hot weather, and let us help you feel amazing in the skin you’re in!

What is a Brazilian?

Well, aside from folks originating from Brazil, a ‘brazilian’ refers to removing all of the hair from the pelvic area, labia, and bum. Essentially, you’re very bare down there when we’re done with you.

Wondering why people do this? Think it sounds painful? Have many more follow-up questions? Most people do, so let’s address these right now:

Why Would Someone Want a Brazilian?

Believe it or not, brazilians are our most requested hair removal service. People love the smooth, hairless aspect to it, and it’s not as painful as one might imagine.

Which brings us to…

Is Brazilian Hair Removal Painful?

It depends on your pain tolerance, but most people find that having hair removed via sugar is less painful than waxing. The areas that are most sensitive are actually on the pubic mound, not the labia or bum as one might imagine.

In other words, brazilians are really no more painful than a regular bikini treatment. We encourage you to try it and assess for yourself!

Fun fact: we provide small, squishy beavers to squeeze if your pain tolerance is low. They’re similar to stress balls, but they make our clients laugh.

How Long Does a Brazilian Last?

Generally speaking, hair removal via sugar lasts completely for about 2 weeks, and then grows back more sparsely. Sugaring treatments are usually 4-5 weeks apart, depending on your rate of hair growth.

Does Sugar’d Offer Brazilians?

Of course! As we mentioned above, a brazilian is our most requested hair removal service. It takes about 15-20 minutes depending on the volume of your hair, and once it’s done, you’ll love it—we promise.

And that’s that! Have even more questions? Check out our FAQ page. To book an appointment, visit our website and figure out which Sugar’d location is closest to you. Contact that location directly to book your brazilian appointment. (Or any other form of hair removal service.)

Dare to be bare—everywhere!
