What Do Different Countries Think of Hair Removal?

Think all regions in the world perceive hair removal as necessary and aesthetically pleasing? Nope! Depending on where you live, you may have a completely different perspective on hair removal than those who live elsewhere.

Here’s what 6 different countries think of removing unwanted body hair:

Canada

In Canada (and the United States, for that matter), hair removal is common. In fact, spotting hairy underarms and legs on an adult woman is fairly unusual!

It’s also mainstream to clean up the bikini area on both men and women, alike. Popular ways to remove unwanted hair include shaving, waxing, and sugaring.

China

China isn’t fully westernized, so Chinese notions of beauty differ greatly than American ones (which is refreshing).

In China, underarm or leg hair is nothing to be worried about; body hair is considered completely natural and acceptable in their culture. As a result, hair removal just isn’t very popular there.

Brazil

You probably think the Brazilian wax derives from Brazil, right? Wrong! It’s actually an American term, and the procedure isn’t very popular in Brazil. The most common grooming style among women in Brazil is to leave a “landing strip” of hair. (Essentially, a bikini wax.)

Brazilian women also prefer to remove hair from their underarms and legs.

Germany

Most German women shave their legs, underarms, and bikini region. Much like in Canada and the US, it is very popular to be smooth and hair-free. Women who forego shaving in Germany are considered to be “alternative” or “free-spirited.”

Waxing and sugaring as hair removal methods aren’t very common in Germany, but laser hair removal is. In Germany, it’s considered the most effective, efficient, and permanent way of removing unwanted hair.

German efficiency, right? 😉

Japan

Most women in Japan prefer to shave their legs and underarms, but tend to leave their bikini area untouched. Japanese women also choose to remove unwanted facial hair by either shaving, waxing, or administering repeated laser hair removal treatments.

France

The “au-natural” movement isn’t so much a thing in France as it is a marketing-generated myth. After the second World War, “American razor depilatory cream companies (as well as nylon stocking manufacturers) wanted to extend their markets overseas and began pushing the fur-free lifestyle hard in France.

According to a 2006 study, 77% of French considered it important for a woman to be free of body hair; 83% of women shaved their legs, 73% shaved their underarms, and 54% shaved their bikini line.” [1]

Interesting, right? If you think hair removal is something you might (or already are) interested, give Sugar’d a try! Our sugar paste is clean, kind to the environment, and 100% natural.

The process is fast and effective, and if you live in Vancouver or the Fraser Valley, we have 6 locations to accommodate you.

Ladies and Gentlemen: Stop Shaving!

Stop shaving!

Although hair removal is usually thought of as something women engage in or practice, the fact is, most men choose to remove hair, too. Nowadays, most men and women in Canada and the United States can say they’ve tried some form of hair removal, whether it be shaving legs, waxing an upper lip or underarm, or sugaring their bikini line.

But what do we really think about hair removal?

Some women believe that hair removal is somewhat of a double standard (having to shave two full legs from 12 years on every couple of days is no light work), but most also will say that they find it necessary or enjoy the feeling of having smooth legs—especially in the summer.

And shaving every couple of days isn’t even necessary…you can employ hair removal methods that last much longer, like sugaring! If you hate shaving so frequently, try our method, and you won’t be sorry.

So what about men?

Many men love to remove hair on their arms (and underarms!), especially if they have tattoos they want to show off during the summer months. Sugaring is great for this, too—the process is fast and efficient and lasts for weeks, not days.

Men also use our services to remove hair on their back and neck—places that are difficult to shave or wax on one’s own. Again, the result is favourable because it lasts a long time in comparison to shaving.

Bottom line? Stop shaving! We know you all love smooth skin and remove at least a little bit of your unwanted body hair on a somewhat regular basis. If you’re doing it anyway, why not do it in an effective way that lasts way longer than 24-48 hours?!

To book a sugaring appointment, visit our website at sugard.ca, and choose the location you’d like to visit—there are six of them for your convenience.

Dare to be bare, friends! Stop shaving and start sugaring.

Hair Removal in Abbotsford

Summer is finally here, and that means it’s bathing suit season. Thinking about hair removal for your bikini line, underarms, legs, or anywhere else?

If you live in Abbotsford, you’re in luck: there are several hair removal providers who specialize in diverse types of hair removal. Here are a few different methods that are available to you:

Sugaring

A very popular hair removal method right now, sugaring is a clean and kind procedure that rids one of unwanted body hair in an eco-friendly way. The product itself is made from just three ingredients: water, lemon juice, and sugar.

Aside from environmentally responsible ingredients, there is also the added benefit of having no applicators or strips to worry about–this means minimal waste!

To prepare for sugaring, hair growth must be at least ¼ of an inch in length, and it’s recommended to repeat the process every 4-5 weeks. Cost is fairly low (typically $30 for bikini).

Waxing

Waxing is fairly similar to sugaring in terms of method, pain, and how long the procedure takes and lasts for, but that’s where the similarities end.

It produces way more waste and pulls the hair in the opposite direction of growth. It also must be heated, which can result in wax burns. Cost is low-mediocre (about $30-$40 for bikini).

If you currently get waxed, we totally recommend you try sugaring—you won’t regret it.

Threading

Threading is very quick and precise, which is fabulous for efficiency and accuracy. It’s highly recommended for hair removal of the brows and other types of facial hair, but not for bikini, legs, or back.

It’s also possible to simply walk into a threading bar instead of making an appointment (which you typically have to do for other types of hair removal), which suits some people better.

Cost is minimal (typically $6-$8 for brows).

Laser

Laser hair removal is a completely different ball game. While the other methods listed above offer only temporary solutions, laser hair removal will help you achieve more permanent results. In fact, if administered properly, it can result in an 80% reduction in hair growth.

But here’s the catch: the procedure involves attending several lengthy appointments over the course of a set time, and it’s not cheap. Cost is high (approximately $250-$650 for legs per session; there are typically several sessions required).

So dare to be bare this summer, and get that unwanted hair removed, stat! To book a sugaring appointment in Abbotsford, visit our website. To find out more about hair removal for men, read our blog post on the topic.

See you soon!

The Environmental Benefits of Sugaring vs. Waxing

Although waxing has been one of the most popular forms of hair removal in the last couple of decades, sugaring is now giving the procedure a run for its money. Why? Because there are so many environmental advantages to sugaring—waxing just doesn’t compare.

Here are two major eco-friendly benefits of sugaring vs. waxing:

Sugar Paste is 100% Natural

We know: we all see the word ‘natural’ thrown out everywhere to describe everything, right? But when it comes to sugaring, it’s true! Our sugar paste is 100% natural—that’s why we call it ‘eco-sweet body hair removal’!

The product itself is made using just three ingredients: sugar, water, and lemon juice. In fact, marketing our product as edible has been part of our recent campaign strategy to show our customers just how natural and kind our sugar paste really is—our product is so natural, you can eat it!

(Just ask our campaign baby…😉)

Waste is Minimal in Comparison to Waxing

Waxing is associated with a lot of unnecessary waste. Take a second to think about it: there are multiple cloth or paper strips, wooden applicators, and then the wax itself, which is environmentally harmful—this stuff doesn’t decompose easily, guys.

All of this adds up to a lot of waste every time someone is waxed!

But with sugar paste, you just use one ball of paste. That’s it! And because it’s a 100% natural, earth-friendly substance, it decomposes easily and efficiently. In fact, you can compost it—and that’s a massive environmental advantage.

No strips, no applicators, and just one small ball of sugar paste. That’s it.

Have we convinced you to trade waxing for sugaring? We hope so! Aside from a host of other reasons to make the switch, sugaring definitely scores more points for the environment than waxing does.

Keep your environmental footprint a little smaller, and book an appointment at the Sugar’d closest to you. Visit our website and check out our locations; we currently have six in BC, including Vancouver, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Mission, and Chilliwack.

Take your pick, contact the shop you wish to visit, and give sugaring a try. No one goes back to waxing, guys. No one. Sugaring vs. waxing? Not even a fair fight.

What You Should Know about Sugaring

If you’ve said goodbye to conventional body hair removal methods and are interested in alternative treatments that last longer and are more efficient, then you need to learn about a newer body hair removal method called sugaring.

Here’s what you need to know:

It’s Safe

What do we mean by ‘safe’? We mean room temperature. As opposed to waxing, sugar paste is not hot and is the same temperature as your skin. This results in zero burns or uncomfortable temperature situations, which can occur during waxing.

Also, sugar paste only adheres to hair and dead skin—this means no accidental tearing of the skin or other harmful side effects.

It Yields Impressive Results

By pulling hair in the same direction as the growth, the result is much cleaner and smoother than pulling it in the opposite direction—something that is done during waxing. The result is smooth skin that stays hair-free for up to two weeks, and then grows back thinner and more sparsely each time you receive another treatment.

It’s Easy

In fact, its so simple that we created kits so busy people like you can sugar yourself from home!

Also, sugaring only takes a few minutes—typically less time than it takes to get waxed. This is because instead of having to apply individual cloth strips to each portion being waxed, we use a ball of sugar paste that is reused throughout your entire treatment.

It’s Usually Less Painful Than Waxing

Again, this is due to the mild temperature and pulling against the grain of the hair. Most of our clients used to be waxed before they were introduced to sugaring, and 100% will tell you they’d never go back.

Sugaring is where it’s at!

It’s Green

Made of only sugar, water and lemon juice, sugar paste is 100% eco-friendly. In fact, it’s so natural, you can eat it! (And we’ve proven that time and time again. Trust us; it’s been the basis for several of our ad campaigns!)

For more information on sugaring or to book an appointment, please visit our website. We have 6 locations across the lower mainland, including Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Surrey, Langley, and Vancouver.

Give sugaring a try, and you’ll never want to use any other body hair removal method—it’s that kind and easy.
